A BIKE club at Holloway School has proved “a great success,” headteacher Bob Hamlyn declared this week.

The club, launched in conjunction with Islington Council’s road safety team, has so far attracted 14 members.

They borrow bikes, helmets and D-locks so they can cycle to and from the school in Hilldrop Road.

The youngsters are also given maps of safe routes home, and club members take part in cycling lessons and maintenance classes.

Doreen Blake, whose two sons are bike club members, said: “My sons cycle to school most days and are getting fitter in the process, not to mention gaining more confidence and experience on the road. It’s amazing that they have been offered bikes to use by the school.”

The road safety team now plans to launch bike clubs at Islington Arts and Media School in Tollington Park and Central Foundation School at City Road.
