COMEDIAN Ruby Wax pushed the lever that sent fireworks exploding into the sky above Marylebone High Street this week.

Jazz band Marylebone Brass provided the music at the Christmas lights ceremony on Wednesday – the first of several festive events planned in Westminster over the coming week.

Today (Friday) Maida Vale ward councillors Jan Prendegast, Alastair Moss and Lee Rowley will switch on the lights at 4.30pm at Lauderdale Parade, with carols from local choirs. On Sunday a Christmas fair will take place from noon to 5pm on St John’s Wood High Street. Lights will be switched on at 3.30pm.

And on Monday, November 29 at 6pm the lights will go on at the entrance to Whiteleys Shopping Centre in Bayswater, when ITN newsreader James Mates does the honours.
