IN what is believed to be a London first, Church Street Library will reopen with an area exclusively for teenagers.
The library, near Edgware Road, has set aside three entire floors for young people, boasting a giant TV and gaming area equipped with a PlayStation, X-box and Nintendo Wii.
The £2.5million makeover comes after the previous library was closed in 2008. It will also feature a “chill-out” area with sofas, where students can get on with their homework. It is due to reopen on August 20.
When complete, it will be more than three times bigger than its previous incarnation, and is expected to increase users by more than 30 per cent.
David Ruse, Westminster Council’s director of libraries and culture, said: “We are dedicated to bringing libraries into the 21st century and ensuring that we continue to provide library services that go beyond the traditional lending of books.
“The revamp of the Church Street site is a perfect example of how we are adapting to meet the changing needs of our users and working with the local community to continue to provide first-class services.”
