MUGGERS on mopeds struck a 55-year-old man in the face with a helmet before stealing his car as he stood outside his home in Belsize Square.
The theft was one of three similar attacks that police are investigating in the area. It took place at around midnight on May 17 after the victim had parked his car nearby before walking to his house.
It is thought the robbers, who were riding on one motorcycle, followed the victim to his parking spot, peered into the car as he parked, and then drove off to watch him make his way to his door before launching their attack. They also stole his watch and cash.
Police said a day earlier, at around 3.30am, a man was assaulted and robbed by two men on a moped as he made his way home along Eton Avenue. Again, the victim was hit in the face before the suspects made off in the direction of Primrose Hill.
And on May 20 a 59-year-old woman was knocked from her bicycle just after 9.30pm as she cycled along Eton Avenue. A moped pulled up in front of her and one of the suspects pushed her over before stealing her bag. The pair made off in the direction of Eton Road. She was not injured but detectives are urging residents of Belsize Village to be vigilant in the wake of the attacks.
Acting Detective Inspector Iain Maddison from Camden’s Robbery Squad said: “We are investigating a series of robberies, which have all involved a moped and may be linked. We urge the community to remain vigilant and contact police if they see anyone behaving suspiciously in the area.”
