DEPUTY prime minister Nick Clegg received boos as well as cheers when he visited City and Islington College on Wednesday, writes Peter Gruner.
The principal of the college in Camden Road, Frank McLoughlin, said a few people had heard on the grapevine that Mr Clegg was coming – and decided to give him a “bit of a heckle” when he arrived. In his first speech as deputy prime minister, Mr Clegg announced government reforms, including getting rid of the identity card programme, protecting the privacy of DNA samples and controlling the use of CCTV cameras.
Asked why Mr Clegg chose the college to make his speech, Mr McLoughlin said: “He’s visited us before and likes us. We’re a good cosmopolitan and vocational college who get some very good exam results.”
