Latest>May 6 - One Week With John Gulliver - Where are the canvassers?

Pubished: 6 May, 2010

AT the last general election I was canvassed by the Lib Dems – if I remember rightly, by Flick Rea, a party veteran.
But in the past month none of the political eager beavers have paused at my door.
I have got the feeling that most of my readers will have experienced the same absence of canvassers.
But leaflets? I have been deluged by them – this week alone I received a mini-newspaper, two leaflets and an envelope personally addressed to me, all from the Lib Dems.
The other parties appear to have disappeared.
This tells me that the Lib Dems, and probably the other parties, have got an army of helpers at HQ, stuffing envelopes, looking up addresses, as well as people who can deliver all this, door-to-door.
But they are weak in numbers when it comes to party members who can go on the knocker and argue the point.
A sign of the death of politics as we used to know it?
