JIMI Hendrix’s former Mayfair home is to be opened up to the public to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his death.

Memorabilia including handwritten lyrics and clothing will go on display at the Brook Street property.

It will be hosted by Handel House Museum – the former residence of composer George Handel – at number 25, which now forms one property along with number 23 where the rock star lived.

Hendrix paid £30 rent for the top-floor flat, where he lived with his English girlfriend in 1968.

The Handel House Museum currently uses it as offices.

Museum director Sarah Bardwell said: “After moving to Brook Street in 1968, Hendrix learnt of the Handel connection with the building and headed to One Stop Records in South Molton Street and HMV in Oxford Street to pick up whichever records of Handel music he could find. Clearly he was intrigued by the connection.”

Hendrix in Britain will run from August 25 to November 7.
