LABOUR'S Karen Buck was this morning declared the winner in the battle for Westminster North, beating the Conservatives' Joanne Cash by more than 2,000 votes after a close-fought election campaign.

The new constituency was considered a target seat by the Conservatives and had been visited, in the run-up to polling day, by high profile figures from the party including London's Mayor Boris Johnson.

The election attracted one of the highest turnouts on record in Westminster and the results were not announced until the early hours of today.

WESTMINSTER NORTH RESULT:

Karen Buck (Labour)  17,377

Joanne Cash (Conservative)  15,251

Mark Blackburn (Liberal Democrat)  5,513

Tristan Smith (Green)  478

Stephen Curry (BNP)  334

Jasna Badzak (UKIP)  315

Ali Bahaijoub (Independent) 101

Edward Roseman (English Democrats)  99

Gabriela Fajardo (Christian Party)  98

Abby Dharamsey (Independent)  32

Total good votes: 39598
