THERE were cheers of delight as plans for a seven-floor development blocking views to Islington’s Union Chapel were thrown out at a planning meeting last night (Thursday). The west area committee ordered developers Notting Hill Housing Trust, who want to build 135 homes at the Ford site at Canonbury Road, to come back with a less obtrusive scheme as more than 120 members of the public looked on. Seven of the borough’s leading conservation groups, led by the Canonbury Society, had objected. Jack Lambert, a spokesman for the society, said: “We’re not against the development we just don’t want it to dwarf Union Chapel.”
