TUBE station forecourts are usually the haunt of newspaper sellers or smokers grabbing a cigarette, but the pavements outside Belsize Park Tube could become a mouth-watering vegetable garden if green group Transition Belsize get their way.

The group, who promote ways to reduce the use of oil, have asked Transport for London for permission to turn an empty patch of tarmac into a vegetable plot. Using grow bags, they hope they will show Tube users how easy it is to grow your own.

Lib-Dem Belsize ward councillor Alexis Rowell said: “Thousands of people will see this site every day. I can’t think of a better way to raise awareness about what we can do as a community to deal with climate change, prepare for peak oil and create a better place to live.”

A Transport for London spokesman said TfL were looking into the proposal.
