ISLINGTON’S Rainbows, Brownies and Guides are enjoying a huge burst of new membership as they celebrate the movement’s centenary this year.

Rainbows (aged 5-7) Brownies (aged 7-10) and Guides (aged 10-14) continue to remain very popular among girls in Islington, and numbers continue to grow.

The borough boasts five Rainbow groups, eight Brownie packs and six Guide companies. Two more Brownie packs are due to open after Easter.

Islington division commissioner Luisa Myers-Nobbs believes that the movement is expanding because it continues to “move with the times”, offering activities, and challenges based on what girls want.

She said: “Girls can progress through the sections, and still gain badges and awards, all in a girl-only and safe environment.

“Badges are modern and fun, and meet the needs of today’s members. While we still have traditions, we continue to offer interesting programmes, both indoors and outdoors.

“We have also recognised the need for being flexible with all our members, meaning many more girls and young women can be part of our movement, in different ways.”

Adult Volunteers also continue to increase, with many gaining the leadership qualification, which many employers now recognise

The movement also  welcomes young women aged 14 to 18 to be part of the senior section, where there are opportunities to complete leadership awards, work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award, be part of international opportunities or even sail on Tall Ships.
