Friends set out on a special Tour de France in memory of Alice

FRIENDS and family turned out to support the start of the 700-mile Angel Ride from Islington Green on Saturday in memory of Heidi Beer, who died of breast cancer six years ago.

The team of four cyclists, led by Heidi’s partner Nick Miles, left at 9.30am to begin their eight-day journey to Morzine in south-eastern France on their vintage inspired bicycles. 

The ride, which will take them through the Alps and along part of the Tour de France, is raising money for the Lavender Trust, a breast cancer charity for young women.

Heidi grew up in Islington and died of breast cancer aged just 29 in 2004. Her  parents David and Sally Beer, who live near Islington Green, came to show their support for the event. 

Mr Beer said: “I am proud of Nick and this event. I know Heidi would have approved. Even Heidi’s nieces have turned out in vintage costume to support it. It is just a shame Heidi never got to meet them.”

Also in the team are three friends of Nick and Heidi. One of the team, Ian Langridge, 33, said; “We are doing this for Heidi, she was so fun loving she would be totally into what we’re doing today.” Ian also admitted the team was quite competitive, and were even planning to award a yellow armband each day for the most gentlemanly sportsman.

Another cyclist, Sam Solieman, an employee of the event’s sponsors, British Insurance, is going as far as Dover with the team. 

He said: “I wanted to do this as I really like cycling and it is such as wonderful cause. My mum battled and overcame cancer so this is important to me.” 

Sarah Curgenvent, Overseas and UK Challenges Manager, with the Lavender Trust said: “We always love to hear about the amazing lengths people go to and we are so grateful for every penny that we receive. We are really excited by the Angel Ride and they have raised so much money through their courage, effort and enthusiasm.”

Adrian Williams, director of Pashley Cycles who have provided the bicycles for Angel Ride, said: “I have been lost for words by the sheer hardwork  the team have put into the training for this.”

The cyclists hope to raise £20,000 which would be doubled to £40,000 by their sponsors. On Saturday they were just £300 away from the target.
