A SCHEME encouraging people to do at least half their shopping locally has soared past the milestone of 500 supporters.

The campaign offers the incentive of a cotton shopping bag for those who help it achieve its aim of boosting businesses across Islington.

The 500th shopper to join the scheme was Leah Christofis, from Holloway, who signed up at D’s Beauty Parlour at the Nag’s Head shopping centre in Holloway.

She said of the centre: “There’s such a good variety of shops – I can get almost everything I need. My kids have loved some of the special events that have been organised here, like Christmas Extravaganza and the international food market.”

The parlour’s manager, Debbie Fletcher, is a keen supporter of campaign. She said: “I’ve run D’s for three years and really enjoy the variety of shopping in the Nag’s Head, but to make sure the town centre stays vibrant we need local people to support their local shops.”

Labour councillor Paul Convery, Islington Council’s regeneration chief, added: “Shopping locally helps to support our local jobs, businesses and communities, especially in difficult times.”
