THE British Red Cross were sent in to provide relief for hundreds of residents who were forced to evacuate their Marylebone block when a blaze broke out in the early hours of Wednesday.

Three people were rescued from the eight-storey building at Berkeley Court, Glentworth Street.

It took 75 firefighters and 15 fire engines more than four hours to put the blaze out after it started in a fourth-floor flat shortly before 2am.

The Red Cross set up an emergency shelter at the Seymour leisure centre near Edgware Road, although police later moved residents into a nearby hotel.

They have now been allowed to return to their homes.

Rosie Moran from the Red Cross said: “Our volunteers looked after 100 residents until they were allowed back into their homes or provided with alternative accommodation at 8am. The Red Cross has a partnership with Westminster City Council and is called in to provide practical and emotional support to residents during a crisis like this.”
