POLICE have issued a warning for members of the gay community to be on their guard after a man was befriended as he made his way home from a gay pub in the West End and later robbed.

The 46-year-old was walking along Shaftesbury Avenue on Saturday at around 3am when he was approached by a “flirty and tactile” man. It is believed when the victim withdrew money from the cashpoint, the suspect took note of his pin number and later withdrew cash from his account.

The suspect was joined by another man, both described as eastern European, and they gave the victim a drink of whisky. The victim immediately became “stupefied,” according to police, and woke up in a hotel in Ilford without his wallet or credit cards.

DC Jim Morrison said: “We advise members of the community to be very careful when accepting drinks from strangers and be vigilant regarding their own purchased drinks.”
