Artist Caroline Dyott who set fire to her home is supported by neighbours
AN artist who set fire to her own Primrose Hill flat was released from custody for the first time in three months yesterday (Wednesday).
Caroline Dyott, who started the blaze in Auden Place while drunk, told firefighters and police she was responsible for the fire as soon as she was rescued.
The New Journal reported in October how Ms Dyott, an artist in her 50s, was dramatically rescued after climbing onto the roof of the housing association property in a bid to escape the flames.
She had to be taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation while her neighbours were all forced from their homes in their pyjamas and dressing gowns. Police later arrested her.
Residents from her block were at Blackfriars Crown Court yesterday to support Ms Dyott as she faced an arson charge.
She is well known for community work. She had recently helped in the communal garden, friends said.
Judge Peter Clarke QC delayed her sentencing in order to put in place an alcohol treatment plan and in the interim set bail conditions that she remain in daily contact with her sister, Penny Dyott. Other friends in the public gallery also offered to help.
Judge Clarke described her act as “incredibly stupid” and said he was “extremely concerned” she would do the same again. Ms Dyott, who will be rehoused in her former flat but has been given temporary accommodation in Camden Town until it is ready, assured him the fire last year was a one-off that would not be repeated.
No explanation of her actions were given in court. She will be sentenced next month.
