Art lovers’ private view of contemporary talent at The Millinery Works Gallery

Gallery curator Paul Connatty with owners Brian Thompson and Derek Rothera

A COLOURFUL display of 120 examples of British contemporary art, including works by Sir Peter Blake, a leading light in the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, is presented by the Millinery Works Gallery in Canonbury until the end of this month.
From Sir Peter’s silk-screen print entitled “I Love You”,  with a £2,850 price tag (he designed  the iconic cover of the Beatles’ album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band), to Sussex artist Shirley Rothera’s distinctive “Sedium Inspired” at £265,  there’s a huge variety of work on show.
Hampstead resident Rosemary Clunie’s green and blue face entitled “Energy Descending” will sell for £385 while Crouch End artist Frank Stanton’s portrait “Solanum” will fetch £750.
A big crowd of art lovers attended a private viewing on Tuesday night.
Curator Paul Conatty said the gallery, originally based in Camden Passage, runs up to 10 exhibitions a year.
Frank Stanton, former head of art at St Dunstan’s College, Catford, said he specialises in plant paintings and is often inspired by visiting Finsbury Park.
“It’s a marvellous open space and they have really tidied it up and done a lot of re-planting,” he said.

• Until January 31 at The Millinery Works Gallery,  85-87 Southgate Road, N1. 020 7359 2019. www.millineryworks.co.uk
