TWO prolific burglars who plagued family homes in hotspot parts of Camden have been jailed as part of a massive police drive to catch persistent thieves.
The pair, Golap Hussain, 34, from Crowndale Road in Mornington Crescent, and Terry Payne, 33, also of Crowndale Road, were jailed as part of a police campaign called Operation Watcher.
The drive, which began in August last year, has so far resulted in 138 arrests and 35 burglary charges. Sixty-two charges in total have been issued.
Mr Hussain was sentenced to 18 months after he was caught breaking into an address in Arlington Road, Camden Town, in October last year.
Officers attended after a smashed window was spotted, and arrested Mr Hussain after they saw him running down a hallway before hiding in a back room.
Mr Payne was handed a term of three years for burglary and assault after he attempted to resist arrest, following a break-in in Gloucester Crescent in Camden Town in August.
Detectives traced him using forensic evidence days after a laptop and photography equipment went missing.
Detectives hailed the operation a success and said repeat offenders had been caught in the crack down.
Detective Inspector Adrian Lewis of Camden CID said: “Residential burglaries are very distressing and can cause people to become fearful of a recurrence, which can impact upon the quality of life for Camden residents.
“By carrying out operations like this one we hope to get the message out that burglars in Camden will be caught and stopped in their tracks.
“Residents can be reassured that officers will continue their efforts to combat burglary crime in Camden.”
• Sinan Canpolat, 35, of Acacia Road in Haringey, awaits trial at Blackfriars Crown Court, charged with attempted robbery.
