THEY remember hailing the “nippies” (to any one under the age of 50, that’s a waitress) to bring them a hearty meal, serenaded by a string quartet in the West End outlets, and always full of conversation and good food, writes Dan Carrier.

But though the Lyons Corner Houses are spoken of with nostalgia by regulars at the King’s Cross and Brunswick Neighbourhood Association luncheon club, it wasn’t a patch on the fresh cooked food they now receive – with a little help from the readers of the New Journal.

We took another cheque from our annual Christmas hamper fund on Friday and handed over £400 to the popular dining club.

We have already given out cash donations from our generous readers to pensioners’ luncheon clubs in Queen’s Crescent, St Pancras and Highgate Newtown – and now the older people who enjoy a three-course feast each day in King’s Cross will have that little extra bit more because of your help.

Queenie Donovan, Kathleen Bass, Sylvia King and Elsie Miner meet regularly for a meal together. All have grown up in the King’s Cross area.

Mrs Donovan said she loved the food. “It is cooked fresh each day and very good value,” she said. “It is always different, and we get the chance to have nice meal and a catch-up.”
