Assembly Hall set to reopen in Upper Street

A HISTORIC hall that hosted the stars of yesteryear has been lovingly restored and is about to welcome its public for the first time in 20 years.

The Grade II-listed Assembly Hall, next to Islington Town Hall in Upper Street, opened in 1930 and attracted the likes of George Formby and Diana Dors, as well as jazz bands and dances.

After falling into disuse in the 1980s, it has now been carefully returned to its original splendour as a space for performances, weddings, and meetings – complete with original features and sprung dance floor.

Now, to celebrate its rebirth – almost 80 years to the day after its opening – a week of free arts events is being laid on from Friday March 5 – Saturday March 13.

The Assembly Hall Showcase programme is packed with theatre, dance, classical and shows for all ages and tastes.
