CHRISTMAS is especially difficult for victims of domestic violence but help is at hand, said Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone on a visit to a women’s refuge in Islington.

She toured the new Solace refuge to publicise the help it will give over the holiday period. The centre, run by national organisation Women’s Aid, was officially opened last month to cope with an increase in attacks on women.

Ms Featherstone said on Friday: “If you are a victim, or if you suspect you know a victim, we want you to know that help is available.

“The work carried out at this refuge is of vital importance and really makes a difference to lives.”

The minister, Lib Dem MP for neighbouring Hornsey and Wood Green, spoke to support workers and victims about their experiences.

Women’s Aid chief executive Nicola Harwin added: “Christmas can be stressful for women living with violent partners, as the family is together for an extended period of time and existing abuse can intensify.”

The centre can be reached on 0808 802 5565 or through the Freephone 24-Hour National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247.
