COUNCILLORS have raised one of the biggest ever donations to the New Journal’s Christmas Hamper Appeal with a daredevil parachute jump.

Beforehand there were grim jokes about potential by-elections if it all went wrong, but just before lunchtime on Saturday, four Labour members – including the Mayor of Camden Jonathan Simpson – reached the ground in one piece.

They raised more than £4,100 in sponsorship, all of which will go directly to making Camden’s most deserving get an extra-special Christmas. Money raised through the appeals pays for surprise hampers to be delivered across the borough next week.

Joining the mayor in the leap through the clouds at an airfield near Peterborough were councillors Tulip Siddiq, Thomas Neumark and Awale Olad. Their bravery means we will have more hampers than ever to distribute to the elderly and single-parent families. It might not solve all of their worries, but the 30-year-old appeal makes them know that they have not been forgotten.

If you know somebody who deserves a Christmas hamper, send your nominations before the end of tomorrow (Friday 17th December) to editorial@camdennewjournal.co.uk
