TRADE unionists, pensioners and students are expected to turn out on mass for a demonstration in Islington against the cuts on Saturday January 29.
Protesters will assemble at 10.30am close to the Nag’s Head at Holloway and march along Holloway Road into Upper Street where there is a plan to demonstrate outside high street banks.
Ken Muller, Assistant Secretary Islington NUT, is helping organise the event on behalf of IHOOPS (Islington Hands Off Our Public Services).
He said: “Bankers continue to pay themselves mega bonuses while 50 teachers and school support staff are to be sacked with 300 more council employees doing important jobs for the community due to follow them. Pensioners are threatened with the closure of their precious Sotheby Mews Day Centre which, for the moment at least, provides them with warmth, company and a hot cup of tea on cold winter’s day.
“In the next four years, £335million of ConDem cuts will mean every Islington home will lose £4,000 per year in vital services, which will mean yet more job losses rent rises and benefit cuts.”
