DOG lovers took their pooches for an extra special walkies on Saturday when they turned out in South End Green for the annual Pup Idol competition.
Organised by All Dogs Matter, the event proved a huge success with pets winning prizes in a host of categories, including Mr and Mrs Hampstead, cutest pup and the dog that most looks like its owner.
Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, his wife Nicole Appleton and her sister Natalie were among the crowds who flocked to the Garden Gate pub to show their support.
One of the big winners was Shahrokh Moghaddam from West Hampstead who was presented with the Best Rescue Award after adopting Jack Russell cross, Ginger.
After being handed a goodie bag full of doggie treats, he said: “We recommend rescuing dogs, it’s so satisfying.
“It would have been a shame buying a puppy from a pet shop or a breeder when Ginger would have been put down. I would strongly urge that anyone planning to get a dog should contact All Dogs Matter.”
All Dogs Matter has gone from strength to strength since being launched two years ago, and is on the verge of opening a new office in Highgate at the end of the month.
Founder Ira Moss, who set up the organisation with Michelle Hurley, was delighted with how the day turned out.
She said: “We raised about £800, which will be used to help keep us running and save more dogs from death row pounds. Pup Idol is about raising awareness for the plight of abandoned dogs in London.”
