The newly refurbished Hampstead War Memorial was rededicated to the men and women who lost their lives in the two world wars during a service yesterday (Wednesday)

RESIDENTS gathered at noon to see the memorial at Whitestone Pond brought back to its former glory thanks to a gift from the estate of a former RAF serviceman.

An £11,000 donation from the late Richard Waller, administered through the trustees of his estate, two local ex-servicemen Alex Rudelhoff and Brian Keys, was spent on replacing the wooden benches with stone structures and restoring the crumbling monument.

The Revd Canon Paul Conrad conducted a short service which included readings from Baroness Garden of Frognal and chairman of the restoration committee John Goldsmith.

Hampstead councilor Linda Chung said: “We are very lucky that a private donation came forward to restore this proud monument to its former glory.”
