A FLY-TIPPER who illegally dumped unwanted tyres on private land in Islington has been jailed for four months.

Following a drawn-out investigation by Islington Council, Malcom Regan, 44, from Bow, was sentenced at Blackfriars Crown Court on Monday.

Two accomplices, Michael Briggs, 29, of Bethnal Green, and Anthony Gustave, 32, from Hackney, were given suspended sentences of three months, ordered to serve 120 hours’ community service, observe a curfew and pay costs of £250 each.

The three men were caught near the Channel Tunnel rail link in York Way in May last year. Council investigators tracked their vehicle and alerted police, who arrested them at the scene.

About 3,000 tyres were found dumped at the site, although it is not known how many were left by the defendants.

The council believes it is the largest-scale prosecution involving the dumping of tyres ever brought by a local authority.

All three men pleaded guilty to breaching the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Because the tyres were dumped on private land, the landowner had to pay to have them removed, a clean-up bill of about £11,000.
