LIBERAL Democrat councillor Syed Hoque has died from a heart attack. He passed away overnight on Friday. A member for Haverstock ward, he was in the process of seeking re-election in the May 6 council elections. Cllr Hoque joined the Lib Dems from the Labour party last year in protest at the government's foreign policy.

Tributes

JILL FRASER AND MATT SANDERS. Liberal Democrat Haverstock councillors

This has been a great shock to us, and we know that the many local people who have been helped by Syed over the last four years will want to join us in sending our deep condolences to Syed’s family.  This is a very difficult time, particularly for Syed’s wife and children, and our thoughts are with them.  Syed was a deeply committed and caring local councillor, a hard working colleague, and a good friend and neighbour to us both. Many of you will have met Syed on the doorsteps as we campaigned together over the previous few months, and will know how proud he was to represent the community he had been a part of for over 25 years.

Conservative group  leader Councillor Andrew Marshall:

I was shocked to hear of Syed's sudden death, and the Camden Conservative Group all send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.  Syed was an unassuming and friendly man who used his considerable professional expertise in social work to work hard for his constituents.  I remember in particular getting to know Syed a couple of years ago while we were both repainting a childrens room at the Royal Free as part of Mitzvah Day.

Labour group leader Councillor Nasim Ali:

I was saddened to hear of the sudden death of Councillor Syed Hoque.  I knew Syed for many years as a local community activist, Labour party member and then as a Councillor. Syed was a very hardworking person who was very passionate about his work on the Council. Syed lived close to me and on many occasions, after the full council meeting, we had long discussions about community issues and how to solve the various problems faced by the community. I campaigned with Syed for the 2006 elections and I recall his commitment and dedication for the local community.  This is a very sad moment for the people of Camden, who will mourn this great loss. The Camden Labour Group and I would like to send our deepest condolences to Syed’s family.
