Key areas

• WE welcome the interim report of Camden’s Education Commission and, in general its preliminary findings.
We also welcome the opportunity to discuss it at the summit at Haverstock School tonight (Thursday).
The work is all the more pertinent in the context of August’s riots.
Key areas where we think the commission will need to concentrate on more to do them justice include:
• how Camden can do better at listening to parents and how the council can act as a champion for parents in their relationship with schools – a related question is how schools can open up more to their communities, for the benefit of both;
• the report refers to the importance of early years, but includes little substance on the issue – given the widely recognised contribution that good early years education makes to life chances, we think this is an area where the commission needs to do a lot more work.
