It’s time to reform our ineffective drug laws

Published: September 15, 2011

THE 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act has failed miserably, as prohibition always does (Forum, September 8).

It is correct that cannabis does less harm to society and the individual than alcohol but as cannabis is usually consumed with broken-up, unfiltered cigarette tobacco and is inhaled more deeply and held in the lungs longer it must, surely, be more damaging to the individual than cigarettes. Isn’t that free choice?

I had my first joint in 1980 and have continued for 31 years, with no mental health issues. I do not drink alcohol.

Portugal legalised the taking of all drugs and drug-related crime has plummeted.

If we followed a similar path the potential tax revenues would be enormous.
