It’s time that our great Grand Union was cared for properly

Published: 1 September, 2011

• I READ recent complaints about duckweed on the Grand Union Canal (GUC) which has now been cleared, but I have to say that over the past 10 years the canal has gone so far downhill it is a disgrace.

The British Waterways Board (BWB) insist on burying their heads in the sand and do nothing to rectify the situation.

I belong to the oldest angling club in the UK and talking to fellow members they make it clear they would not fish in the GUC in London because of the state of the water.

A recent inquiry to lease a section of the canal was met with a response that would require my club to pay in excess of £4,000 to catch almost nothing.

How can the BWB charge a fee for anglers when they never stock fish or clean the canal?

Also, why are there no bailiffs stopping cyclists racing along the canal towpath with no respect for people walking the towpath?

Is it not time that the BWB took control of this entire situation?

Whenever I do fish the GUC, there are always tourists wanting directions, to the Lock, London Zoo or Little Venice.

They ask my permission to take my photo and I always say yes and have a chat telling them about the GUC.

It’s time BWB took steps to safeguard and upgrade what should be a valued amenity for London.
