United on top salary

Published: 6 May, 2011

• THE Tribune recently carried an article about the salary of Islington Council’s chief executive (Cameron under fire over top salary gaffe, April 22).

Contrary to the comments made by Islington Labour politicians, the decision about the salary was made by the council’s personnel committee in April 2008. This committee was made up of Liberal Democrat and Labour councillors, including the current Labour leader of the council and Labour executive member for finance.

I support the move to a lower salary for the new chief executive when times are so tough for councils financially. Liberal Democrats also came up with the idea last summer of reducing our costs further by sharing a chief executive with neighbouring Camden.

Sadly, this wasn’t to be after the two councils could not agree on how to move this idea forward.

However, I would not want your readers to be left with the impression that the former Liberal Democrat administration agreed the current chief executive’s salary when it was in fact also agreed by Labour councillors.
