Fresh wave of students courtesy Arsenal

• ARSENAL’S performance in recent years is the antithesis of its motto, “Victory grows through togetherness”.

First, the fans. Imposing a six per cent increase next season when the club made a profit of £56million in 2010 must, by anybody’s reckoning, qualify as sheer stupidity and greed. The fans were not far wrong when they sang “You’re having a laugh” at the last home match.

Second, the residents. Arsenal plans to build a social housing ghetto in Queensland Road. This will, of course, not affect the welfare of the Arsenal directors and senior management but the reality is that these residents will be cooped up with almost no convenient access to green space.

Now, the club is at it again. The latest plans involve cashing in by building a 25-storey (yes, 25) block of student residences at the roundabout by the stadium.

Never mind the height (much higher than any of the surrounding buildings), consider the impact of another 400 students trying to get on to the Piccadilly line at Holloway Road in the rush hour; another 400 students accessing the limited health and other facilities.

The area clearly cannot cope with such a large influx but, no doubt, Arsenal’s consultants will receive fees such that will enable them to produce evidence to indicate this influx can easily be accommodated.
