AV illusion?

Published: 5 May, 2011

THE Alternative Vote just gives an illusion of fairness (Letters, April 21)?

It is not as fair as proportional representation but it is a lot fairer than first-past-the-post under which system a party can be elected with even less than 30 per cent. So we cannot say that AV is not fairer than the present system in which a winning party can do anything it wants to do, introducing new laws.

The present system is also very dangerous for the citizens of the country because the leader of the winning party can, in the name of the monarchy, do anything he or she wants – as Tony Blair did with war against Iraq.
