What of the SDP if Healey had been Labour leader?

Published: 25 March, 2011

• THE Gang of Four formed the SDP for another reason (Wanna be in our gang? Review, March 18).

The Labour Party had changed its policies to the point where they could no longer, in conscience, support it.

Michael Foot was a disaster as Labour leader, as the 1983 general election proved.

A Denis Healey-led party would presumably have meant no SDP and a smaller Conservative majority in 1983.
