Unfair to repay £10m

Published: 3 March, 2011

• WE’RE told the council may have to repay £10million in overpaid charges to people who paid parking fines by credit card.

You report that the bulk of this may go to “big companies and supermarkets that have routinely paid the extra charge”. While fully acknowledging that these companies have an absolute right to be repaid, I hope they will think hard before depriving residents of services which it will not be possible to provide if they insist on their pound of flesh.

You report that these charges were levied by the previous Lib Dem-Conservative council; yet it is the Labour council which may be penalised, even though they have now been stopped. This seems very unfair.
