Time will be kind to Lowry

Published: 10 March, 2011

• LS Lowry lived a long and productive life (1887-1976) but sadly he did not reach 100 (misprint, Why the Tate must liberate Lowry from its vaults, Review, March 3).

I, too, have noticed the absence of his work at the Tate – and complained. His reputation has suffered, I fear, through over-exposure – “the people’s artist”, a silly song, “matchstick figures” – all untrue, tarnishing his stature as a profound, sensitive, artist. Time will, I’m sure, be kind to him. His art will endure.
