Talk sense about the Census

Published: 4 March, 2011

• THE exotically named Mr Floru sounds like a complete fool (Questions offend  census sensibilities of Tory Jean-Paul, Diary, February 25).

The Census is not about collecting information on individuals, whether to nanny them or otherwise, but about providing statistical data at household level. The use of the term “Big Brother” is mischievous and irresponsible; as a councillor he should be helping to explain the reasons for the Census and the way in which cross-analysis of data enables planners to anticipate population trends and plan services: in the case of local authorities giving data down to ward level.

It’s not interested in you, Floru, although in 100 years’ time, when the information on individual households is released, your descendents may be disappointed to find that great-grandfather failed to fill in his census form.

Jean-Paul Floru should acquire a sense of civic responsibility or stand down as a councillor.
