Save Tube light show

Published: 25 March, 2011

• I WOULD like to register my dismay that the tower of flashing lights atop Archway Tube station, “the Big Rock Candy Fountain”, is due to be dismantled and taken down shortly.

While not everyone can appreciate it as a work of art, it is a magnificently colourful array of lights which really bring a huge amount of joy to this otherwise rather dark and dingy space.

The lights have only been in situ for a few months and that is far too short an amount of time.

In the same vein as the London Eye, which was only supposed to be beside the Thames for a year but is still in place 11 years after going up, the Candy Fountain has quickly created its own, unique place in our local environs. Losing it now would be a travesty.

I understand it is being removed because Transport for London (TfL), those eternal party poopers, has said it has to be removed. I also appreciate that it is on top of one of its buildings.

But I think we should all protest to TfL that this is one of the few good things it has allowed to happen in Archway. If it has any interests in the community, it should grant a stay of execution.
