Protesters took a stand on fighting cuts

Published: 3 March, 2011

• CONGRATULATIONS to all the protesters who made a stand against cuts in Camden on Monday. Shame that the Labour councillors didn’t do the same. They oppose the Tory-Lib Dem cuts to the council budget of more than £90million but voted to carry them out.

We have called on councillors to tell Cameron and Clegg that they cannot make these cuts because they will destroy the services people rely on. Yes, we would be threatened with commissioners but the pressure would be on the government not the neediest in the borough.

Instead of spending reserves on redundancy payments to cut 1,000 jobs, services could remain while we take up where the students left off with a national campaign to defend all our public services that mounts enough pressure to open up the splits in the government.

Starting with a massive turnout on the national demonstration on March 26, we will have to step up the action to defend our services whatever the councillors do.
