Politicians must consider the impact of any library closure

Published: 24 March, 2011

• I WAS glad to see Councillor Tulip Siddiq lending her support to the campaign to secure the future of Highgate Library when she attended the We Love Highgate Library Day on March 5.

Brookfield Primary is proud of its close links with the library. Pupils use the library both in school time and after school on a regular basis. Both the school and the library serve the whole of the local community and the loss of the library or a depletion in the services it offers would have a significant impact on children and their families. I trust that Cllr Siddiq will convey her enthusiasm for the library to her colleagues on the council and urge them to take into account the potential impact if Highgate or other libraries close.

• LIBRARIES and all they stand for are the mark of a civilised community.

Having just completed the consultation survey in which I not only supported the use of volunteers (as the lesser evil) but also offered my services. We can only do what we can and if I cannot do anything else, the least I can do is offer to volunteer.

• TO date we have received over 3,000 responses to the consultation, testament to how valuable our libraries are to the communities of Camden. I would strongly urge as many people as possible to respond before the deadline on April 4.
