Penalties of life on move

Published: 3 March, 2011

• IN 2004, we conducted research into the impact of short-term housing and its effect on individuals’ willingness to engage with the community. We found that tenants who were forever on the move did not vote, did not know who their councillors and MPs were, or speak to their neighbours.

They were less likely to register with a doctor or dentist and to know about council services and community organisations. So, if tenants are forced to move home as a result of local housing allowance (LHA) cuts, it will not only be bad for them and their families, but also for the health of democracy.

We are working with advice providers to produce information for private tenants affected, what options will be available to them and where they should go for advice and support.

We are campaigning with other organisations, including Shelter. We want to do something about this important issue, but we are a small organisation and can’t do it alone.

We can be contacted on 020 7383 0151 or by email at admin@cfpt.org.uk
