An outrage
Published: 31 March, 2011
• THE more I read about the government’s HS2 proposals to build a fast speed train from Euston to the suburbs of Birmingham, the more outraged I become (Letters, No to high speed arrogance, March 24).
It is hard to believe that the same government that is trying to convince its constituents to tighten their belts is spending an absolute fortune on the planning of this ill-conceived scheme which will benefit only a few and harm so many.
The price tag for this folly will be added to the other extravagances our previous government has pushed down our throats, and which our children and grandchildren will be landed with paying off.
Furthermore we are betrayed by our own local officers intent of keeping their mouths shut over the possible loss of some 300 dwellings in Camden to facilitate this project at a time when there is a housing shortage.
There is so little that commends this project, that one can only fear that some sinister deals must have been agreed behind the scene.
I, for one, will fight tooth and nail to prevent this arrogant, ill-conceived project from getting off the ground and continue to waste our precious resources.
The consultation about HS2 is difficult, tricky to decipher, but I would urge everyone to ask for the documents and give it a try. It is our only chance to prevent our ill-advised government from going ahead with this crazy scheme.
