Not the site for war memorial

Published: 17th March, 2011

• ON the subject of the proposed war memorial in Mornington Crescent, (New Journal, March 10) we have had feedback from some of our members concerning the planning application.

The feeling is that this is definitely not the right place to commemorate the suffering of British soldiers. We feel than an island, surrounded by heavy traffic; crowded at weekends and late-night revellers from Camden Lock and local nightclubs, especially the Koko’s venue – which is directly opposite – is inappropriate.

We feel it should be located more centrally, or perhaps in some quiet, public gardens or churchyard, for contemplation in a peaceful environment.

Another point is the impact it would have on young, international visitors, who help to keep business afloat in the area. One must remember that in over 50 years, both we and our former enemies, have changed radically.

At this time there is a universal call for peace and reconciliation. If anything is to go in this place it should echo these sentiments, especially when in harmony with the spirit and political convictions of (Sir Richard) Cobden – a peacemaker.
