Let’s unite against cuts

Published: 25 March, 2011

• THERE is little argument that cuts to public services will be felt most starkly by the most vulnerable people in Islington.

As these services are withdrawn, the social consequences will be felt by all those who live, work or socialise here. We will all experience the effects of the social breakdown that will occur, as it impacts on us all as we attempt to safely carry out our daily lives.

For these reasons it’s crucial that as many residents as possible attend the main TUC-organised demonstration in central London tomorrow (Saturday) to send the strongest possible message of opposition to the government ministers and their banker friends who are so utterly disconnected from the daily lives of ordinary people that they do not know or care about the suffering their decisions are causing.

Over the coming months there will be many opportunities for communities to come together and share experiences of how this attack on basic living standards is impacting on each of us, and to explore together how we can act to challenge this assault, for it is clear that Islington cannot afford more cuts of this kind in the future.

However, tomorrow is not the day for such a local focus. On that day many thousands of ordinary people who like us are seeing jobs and services lost will travel from across the UK to the centre of our capital city, where they know that power sits and where they hope to make their voices heard. For this purpose 650 coaches have been booked and several trains chartered.

Whether you plan to assemble in Highbury Fields tomorrow or meet with us in Lincoln’s Inn Fields to join other boroughs for the feeder march, make sure you are at the main demonstration between Embankment and Hyde Park.

It is vital we send the strongest possible signal to central government that we will not tolerate the cuts to vital public services. To challenge this government we must stand together. Let’s start tomorrow.
