Come home soon, Tom

• I WAS so sorry to read about the plight of my old friend Tom Costello (Tom: Fresh section bid, March 3). 

Along with his brother, Terry, we played together in the same York Rise football team. Tom was known as a “Chopper Costello”, as he played very much like 1970s Chelsea defender Ron “Chopper” Harris: hard but fair.

I had not seen Tom or Terry for so many years, and then we met at a friend’s funeral last year, as well as at Terry’s birthday party.

I and all of Tom’s old friends agree, that if ever a man deserved a happy retirement, it was Tom.

I hope the situation is resolved satisfactorily, and to the wishes of both Tom and his family.
