Club without hefty fees

Published: 3 March, 2011

• I VISIT West Hampstead, the Heath and other libraries. I like them all and I want them to live.

I never leave a library feeling disappointed. I always find what I want: books, leaflets, the use of a computer, helpful staff and well-behaved fellow users. A library is like a private club, without the huge membership fee. It is an important part of a community, and one of our grandest services.

Getting rid of a library, large or small, is vandalism. The consultation document contains cold-blooded questions and the online version is a total put off.

Keep the libraries. It will be a good deed in a naughty world.
