Centre changed my husband’s life

Published: 3 March, 2011

• I AM really dismayed to learn that Hillwood resource centre is going to be closed down. I joined the centre when my husband had a stroke and his mobility became impaired. He was a man who enjoyed life to the full, but after the stroke his outlook changed. He found himself caged within four walls and depression set in.

The health centre in Kentish Town suggested joining Hillwood and the change in  him was remarkable. He enjoyed the company of others there, the meals eaten round the tables and the activities, especially the music.

When he died this year aged 91, I continued to go to the Hillwood, where the staff were supportive and compassionate and always available to have a chat. As I live alone, the few hours in the company of other members there is much appreciated.

• SINCE my mother started going to Hillwood I have seen a positive change in her mental attitude, thanks to her being able to escape the solitude of her flat to chat with people her own age.

The centre provides opportunities to keep her mind active such as transport to the supermarket, keep-fit classes and day trips.

I am aware of the need for cutbacks but I feel this to be a very short-term one. In the long term there will be an increased cost to social services in the form of meals-on-wheels services, home helps and increased healthcare costs due to depression.

• HILLWOOD resource centre provides an essential service to elderly people. Without it, most users would be deprived of a guaranteed meal and company. I appreciate the need  for savings to be made but I cannot accept the elderly should bear any of these.

• I HAVE learning disabilities with consequent social exclusion. I often visit Hillwood centre together with my carer to join in social activities and have lunch. I thoroughly enjoy all of this.

The staff are wonderful and it all helps to contribute to my wellbeing, awareness and belonging.

• I HAVE had the pleasure of going to Hillwood for 18 years and have made many friends.

I am 78 and they help me with any problem, such as phone calls and form filling. If Hillwood is closed, my days are going to be very lonely.

• IF Hillwood closes I will be lonely and bored. I feel special when I attend the parties they organise there.
