Bully tactics won’t work

Published: 25 March, 2011

• I WAS quiet surprised to see that a fair percentage of free school meals were heading into the bin (Call for a ban on takeaways near schools, March 11).

It clearly exposes some flaws with this good idea.

The councillors’ idea that they should close down or hinder fast-food outlets from trading nearby is kind of silly.

Locking pupils in school is even worse as they may decide not to eat at all.

If you try to bully them they will react negatively, slamming down chocolate bars on the sly.

Perhaps the focus should be on the healthy foods which children will eat. Then, with some dialogue and a bit of cooperation from all concerned, everyone can be a winner,
