Big shop rent hikes will work against landlords

Published: 31 March, 2011

• IN response to John Gulliver’s article (Sharp shock for business, March 24), landlords are doing themselves no favours by raising rents by 50 per cent in Kentish Town Road.

In this harsh economic trading climate, independents may find it impossible to pay these increases and will be forced to vacate their shops.

Landlords may well be unable to find someone to take over and shops will lie empty for months, maybe years, bringing in no rent.

Eventually landlords will have to lower their rents in order to attract traders back into our high street.

Kentish Town Road is a successful buzzing high street now.

Landlords, do you really want to see a dead street full of empty shops, estate agents and coffee bars?
