Thanks for Tribune’s role in saving pensioner centre

Published: 24th June, 2011

• I AM writing to express my thanks to the Tribune for its part in the recent battle to keep open the pensioner centre at Sotheby Mews. When Islington Council announced it was proposing to withdraw funding from this centre, there was an immediate outcry from pensioners who use it on a daily basis. For some it was, and still is, their home.

Lobbying of the council, led by Henry Bourner and the members’ committee, included petitions, marches to the Town Hall, numerous interviews, letters and articles. There is no doubt in my mind that the role played by your newspaper was crucial to the centre remaining open. So, a very warm thanks to Tribune staff.

The centre is now managed well by Highbury Roundhouse and is returning to old ways and some new ones. On Wednesday, July 13, there will be a barbecue at 12.30pm followed by Old Time Music Hall, opened by Mayor of Islington Councillor Phil Kelly.

Without Tribune support this would not be happening.
